MIMMI SCHEIBE – the watercolorist stuck in childhood nostalgia, delivering one hundred percent colorful retrospective art.
MIMMI SCHEIBE is an artist born in the seventies from Nyköping who is somewhat stuck in the trends, gadgets and memories of her childhood; Red shiny clogs, mosquito bites, “Raketost”, apple-flavored lip gloss, ABBA and dinner with cube steak and fries.
A few years ago, Mimmi felt that she was missing pictures of things she remembered from her youth. Since there was no documentation or photographs, she began to paint from gadgets and memories that she had. In art, Mimmi is proudly self-taught and she feels that she is, in a sense, educating herself every time she holds the brush in her hand.
From her parents, who were a drawer and an advertiser, she has inherited a love of image, color, shape and design. Creating was a natural part of childhood. As a child, Mimmi mostly drew portraits and animals in pencil. ”I lay there on the floor, chewing the old chewing gum Jenka and drawing until my arms went numb.”
Her inspiration can come from seeing something that she recognizes from growing up. And Mimmi says: ”With the speed of light, I travel back in time to when I might have played with it, or the trend that existed around the thing. Another inspiration comes from all the conversations with friends, family and colleagues around the coffee table. You know those conversations that start with: – Do you remember…”
Mimmi still creates for her own well being, and she explains that she has so much fun at the drawing board with her paint and her memories. The technique is watercolor. With a lot of paint in the brush and in many layers, she creates colorful motifs. The theme is always: ”Art you remember.”
